As the cybersecurity community descended on San Francisco for the RSA Conference last week, BSA | The Software Alliance brought together leaders from industry and government to discuss how to build a more secure and prosperous digital ecosystem.
At multiple events on the sidelines of the RSA conference, several policy imperatives stood out. While cybersecurity leaders agreed that threats are both real and growing, there are concrete steps available to counter those threats.
BSA’s guests heard that message during a discussion with Abby Deift, Executive Director at Cyber Safety Review Board during a lunchtime panel alongside Kyndryl Global Security and Resilience Leader Kris Lovejoy, SAP Executive VP and Chief Security Officer Tim McKnight, and BSA Director of Policy Henry Young.
Top industry executives gathered later in the week to hear from one of the top diplomats on cybersecurity, when Ambassador Nate Fick, from the US State Department’s Office of Cyberspace and Digital Policy, and the European Commission’s Lorena Boix Alonso joined an exclusive conversation hosted by Abhi Sawant, CTO at Okta, a BSA member.
Between the two conversations, a consensus emerged that it’s not a question of whether regulation is good or bad – but rather, how risk-based, outcome-focused laws and policies can both improve security and enable digital transformation.
The discussions also showcased the importance of countries improving cybersecurity by working together to harmonize laws and policies to reduce barriers to entry and incentivize best practices for cybersecurity, including driving better identity practices.
