In this BSA series – “Why AI?” – enterprise software leaders explain in their own words how artificial intelligence (AI) is having a positive impact on individuals, businesses, and organizations worldwide. In this submission, BSA board member and DocuSign Chief Legal Officer Jim Shaughnessy writes about a new AI-powered system that detects whether an applicant is a “live” person – not a pre-recording or a deep fake.
1. Why AI?
At DocuSign we’ve been incorporating AI into our products for several years to offer new capabilities and solve important problems for our customers. Agreements represent one of the most promising use cases for artificial intelligence, and we’re excited about the potential to use AI to make agreements smarter, easier and more trusted for our customers.
Trust and transparency have always been at the core of DocuSign, and our work with AI is no different. We’re deploying cutting-edge innovations in ways that deliver tangible benefits while also bolstering and enhancing security. A good example is our recently introduced Liveness Detection for ID Verification, which delivers a more efficient end-user experience along with higher identity assurances and reduced failure rates.
2. Can you give an example?
Earlier this year DocuSign introduced liveness detection for ID verification, a system that makes sure recipients are who they say they are by comparing the photo on a signer’s identity document with the video selfie they are asked to take with their phone. This AI-powered system analyzes various factors, such as facial movements, to confirm the applicant is a “live” person and not a pre-recording or deep fake. This deters fraud, prevents identity spoofing and ensures the signer is present at the time of verification, reducing the possibility of impersonation.
Liveness detection creates an incredible experience for customers, delivering the equivalent of face-to-face security without the inconvenience of showing up in person. Tasks that used to take hours or even days now can be completed in minutes. For the service provider, liveness detection enhances security and reliability while eliminating the cost of doing manual identity checks. Liveness detection has a wide range of use cases across industries, such as opening new bank accounts and making mobile deposits, processing applications for loans and mortgages, and managing insurance claims.
