Olga Medina – Director, Policy

From Pasadena, Texas. Living in Washington, DC.

I joined BSA | The Software Alliance in September 2022. Before that, I was a Chief of Staff in Deloitte’s Government and Public Services practice, where I led business development and strategic planning for the firm’s Homeland Security practice. I also oversaw teams supporting technology projects in privacy and cybersecurity in Deloitte’s Cyber Risk practice.

Previously, I was a Counsel for the US Senate Judiciary Committee, where, in addition to working on homeland security policy issues, one of the highlights of my job was working on two Supreme Court nominations.

I earned my law degree from the University of Texas School of Law and my undergraduate degree from Stanford University. As a first-generation college graduate, I am passionate about mentoring others through their academic and professional journeys.

What attracted you to work at BSA?

First, I was drawn to work at BSA due to its mission of advocating on behalf of the enterprise software sector. Our member companies are at the forefront of emerging technology solutions shaping the industry’s future. Working at BSA gives us a great opportunity to contribute to these developments through the lens of technology law and policy.

Second, I was drawn to the people and culture at BSA. I am continuously impressed with the deep expertise that our colleagues from all areas of the world bring to the policy issues affecting BSA member companies. Beyond that, they are all dedicated to their work, support a balanced and collaborative work environment, and are great to be around.

What advice can you give someone who just started their career/wants to pursue a similar career?

Don’t stop learning. Last year, I read “Think Again,” by Adam Grant. One of my favorite quotes from the book is, “If knowledge is power, knowing what we don’t know is wisdom.”

I think it is extremely valuable, especially early in one’s career, to seek opportunities to learn and challenge one’s own beliefs and assumptions. Every experience and person that I have come across in my career has taught me something new.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.

If you’ve ever seen the movie, “Selena” — based on the life of Tejano music singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez — you are probably familiar with the opening scene, where Selena performs in front of a record-breaking crowd at the Houston Astrodome in an iconic purple jumpsuit.

I was there for the concert on which the scene is based. It was Selena’s final live performance, and as a beaming nine-year-old at the time, I was captivated by her larger-than-life presence.

How do you turn a bad day into a good one?

Music. If I’m having a bad day, I will turn on an upbeat song, and that instantly improves my mood.

What is one of your favorite places to take out-of-town visitors when they’re in Washington?

I like to take visitors on a tour of Washington’s monuments at night. My favorite is the Lincoln Memorial. It’s one of those places that makes you pause and reflect amid the hustle and bustle of city life.

What are some of your favorite foods?

I love tacos and barbecue, two specialties in my home state of Texas.
