Software Powers the Distance Economy

The world changed in 2020 and the “new normal” continues to change every day, for every aspect of the human experience. While it may be some time before society returns to recognizable personal and professional routines, the nation and world have come to rely on technology like never before. From remote learning and work to telemedicine and teleconferencing, today’s technology has allowed us to remain connected from a distance and provided some semblance of normalcy to many lives and businesses around the world.

BSA | The Software Alliance has been working to assist our members and their employees—enterprise software companies that provide the technology for business to do business—as they continue to provide uninterrupted access to critical infrastructure throughout the world. Not only are BSA members empowering people to stay connected through their own technology and the support of other technologies and applications, but they are working to ensure that those networks and the information shared between employees, students, customers and family members are safe and secure.

From processing payroll and medical benefits to providing cybersecurity tools to keep remote workers safe, BSA members are helping businesses continue their operations during this global health emergency.

  • Companies including Adobe, Atlassian, Autodesk, Bentley, Box, Cloudflare, Microsoft, PTC, Salesforce, Slack, and Trimble are providing free access to collaboration software to keep teams connected as offices shift to remote work.
  • As telework has become the norm, cybersecurity threats are on the rise. BSA members including IBM, McAfee, Microsoft, Okta, and TrendMicro have risen to this challenge by providing free resources and advice on how companies and employees can protect themselves.
  • Several BSA members have provided software and services to help organizations manage and protect their workforce during the pandemic. Companies including Microsoft, Salesforce, ServiceNow, and Splunk launched solutions to help employers coordinate emergency information sharing, manage exposure risk, and shift workflows when employees are out sick.

As the COVID-19 pandemic disrupts normal routines, software is keeping businesses of all sizes connected to customers and suppliers.

  • To help healthcare organizations react to a rapidly shifting supply chain, IBM launched Rapid Supplier Connect, a block chain network which enables organizations to quickly identify and onboard alternative vendors of medical supplies and equipment.
  • Intuit has launched Intuit Aid Assist, a program aimed at helping small businesses navigate COVID-19 aid and relief programs.
  • Several BSA members have joined the Open for Business Hub, a group of technology companies that are helping small businesses by enabling remote work throughout COVID-19.

BSA members will continue to provide assistance to their communities during this time of crisis. For the most up-to-date list of COVID-19 responses from member companies, please visit our BSA Member Resources hub.
