Brian Silverman – Senior Program Manager, Compliance Solutions
Born in NY (go Yankees!), but grew up in Silver Spring, MD. Currently living in Washington, DC.
Before joining BSA in April 2017, I worked for a government contractor in Rockville, MD, primarily planning events and managing websites for the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Extramural Research and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Health Care Payment Learning and Action Network. I have a bachelor’s degree in international business from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL.
What attracted you to work at BSA?
The global nature of the work we do at BSA was, and remains, very attractive to me. The software industry spans nearly every country and culture in the world, and I really enjoy learning from our colleagues and members about the unique impacts of technology and software in different places.
What’s the most unique part about working at BSA?
Whenever someone asks me what I do for work, I get excited to tell them that I have colleagues in so many different places around the world. I’m grateful to be a part of such a diverse group of people all working towards a common goal. Additionally, working with a team of people who are incredibly smart and driven, while being kind and understanding of the need for a work-life balance, is truly unique in today’s world.
What’s the most helpful thing you’ve learned working at BSA?
Prioritize and communicate! Things happen fast in our line of work, so you always have to know what to tackle first and how to shift focus depending on the circumstances. It’s also incredibly important to communicate with your team to make sure everyone is on the same page, which I think we do very well at BSA.
Tell us one fun fact about you (that might surprise your colleagues).
I’m a certified bartender! The job market was rough when I graduated from college, so I got my certification and worked at a local bar in Maryland while applying for jobs. Now, it’s mostly a fun party trick, but it comes in handy if I’m in the mood for an old-fashioned.
What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
All of them. Every single ice cream flavor. It’s my weakness. I can’t open a pint without it being completely gone in minutes. Right now, the Black & White Cookie Batter flavor at Dolcezza is in the number one spot, but it’s a constantly rotating list.
Favorite spot in your hometown, or current city?
The Enid A. Haupt Garden behind the Smithsonian Castle. It’s a nice, quiet hideaway from the craziness of the monuments and museums on the National Mall. My girlfriend, Lucie, and I always stop there to sit and relax (and people watch) when we go for walks around the city.
How do you unwind after work?
I played sports growing up, so fitness has always been important to me for managing stress and feeling healthy. Unfortunately, knee injuries have kept me from running for the last few years, but after work, I unwind by lifting weights, doing yoga, and taking long walks around Washington.
When was the last time you completely unplugged?
During my sabbatical in 2022 (another huge perk of working at BSA), I went on a road trip in New Zealand from Queenstown to Auckland and hiked over 100 miles in the process. I didn’t open a single email while I was there, and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life!
