Philip Ahearn – US Government Relations Associate
From the Bronx, New York. Living in Arlington, Virginia.
I came to Washington, DC, in 2018 to pursue a degree in political science at the Catholic University of America. I also minored in philosophy and earned my degree in May 2022.
During my junior year of college, I was offered an internship with BSA’s legislative strategy team in January 2021. After two and a half thrilling years, I received another offer from BSA; this time, to join the staff.
What attracted you to work at BSA?
I was initially interested in working at BSA because of the policy areas we focus on. Before entering college, I had planned to pursue a degree in computer science. Living and studying in Washington, I developed a passion for political science. Working at BSA has proven to be a perfect place to blend these two intellectual interests.
What’s the most unique part about working at BSA?
Easy: BSA’s culture. I’m thankful to work with the smartest minds in the industry, and I always find myself walking away from the office knowing more than I did before. On top of that, there’s a commitment to each other’s development that is truly unmatched. It really feels like we’re all in this together.
What advice can you give someone who just started their career/wants to pursue a similar career?
Always keep things in perspective! More often than not, you’re not going to master a new skill or provide a perfect deliverable on your first try. This shouldn’t mark the end of the road; it’s only a detour, and you have to keep going!
Do you have any pets, and if so, what do you have?
I have two Pembroke Welsh corgis that keep me on my toes: Freddie Mercury, our pandemic pup and serial barker, and Elton John, who we’re not entirely sure has a single thought running through his head! Don’t let the pictures fool you; they’re crazy pups!
What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
My favorite ice cream flavor — and the one and only ice cream I eat — is Ben & Jerry’s chocolate chip cookie dough!
Favorite spot for a coffee meeting?
Washington is home to some great coffee shops, but I’m partial to Compass Coffee (their vanilla cream cold brew, specifically!).
Favorite spot in your hometown or current city?
It’s hard to pick one favorite spot back in New York City. The best I can give is a tie between the Bronx Zoo (Jungle World, specifically) and Yankee Stadium (Go Yanks!).
